The activities that occur in a warehousing facility can sometimes get hectic. Implementing proper preventive measures can go a long way in ensuring the safety of employees, and minimize loss or damage to items in the warehouse.
Every storage system faces the risk of an occasional operational mishap. Sometimes, it could be as simple as having a forklift jamming into a rack. Though the rack might not collapse, its structural integrity would significantly be diminished. Fortunately, much can be done to militate against such occurrences.
Ensure that drivers receive adequate training
Driver training should be a priority in any warehouse, and forklift drivers should be required to present proper certifications prior to embarking on the job. They should also be exposed to regular training courses on racking systems, forklift maintenance and characteristics. This should further enlighten them on the operational limits of the forklift.
Ensure there is adequate visibility within the warehouse
Forklift drivers stand a better chance of avoiding accidents in the warehouse if the facility is well lit. Proper warehouse lighting would enable the driver negotiate and maneuver through aisles with ease. Also, mounting of convex mirrors at the end of aisles would increase visibility and would contribute in reducing the occurrence of driver mishaps.
Run regular rack inspection
Pallet racks should undergo regular inspection by trained personnel. Areas to inspect should be things like the structural integrity of the racks, corrosion, row alignment floor conditions, and rack overloading. Over time, pallet racks experience a reasonable amount of wear and tear, hence the need to have them checked regularly.
Aisle clearance and speed limits
It is important to ensure that aisles are clutter-free, and have ample room to enable the driver maneuver the forklift safely. Placing conspicuous speed limit signs and warnings related to other safety concerns is also a good means of keeping employees abreast on their safety.
Warehousing facilities are usually busy and hazardous activity centers, and in such places, the risk of having an operational hazard tends to be high. However, the risk factor is substantially reduced with efficient planning, regular employee trainings, and proper equipment maintenance.
